A sub-regional forum on Information for All to take place in Philippines

Universal access to the Internet and the implementation in UNESCO Member States of the Strategic Plan for the Information for All Programme (IFAP) will be the focus of the Sub-Regional Forum on Information for All, supported by UNESCO. It will take place from 19 to 20 March 2009 in Pasig City, the Philippines.
The Forum is convened by the Philippine National Committee for IFAP, in cooperation with the Philippine Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), the Philippine National Commission for UNESCO (Communication Committee) and the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication. Participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam will include representatives of government, civil society, private sector and the academic world.
The Forum will provide an opportunity to present the highlights of the IFAP Strategic Plan as parameters for the development of national information policy schemes, and for the inclusion of information-related strategies and components in UN development assistance frameworks. Participants will also review the five priorities of IFAP (Information for Development, Information Literacy, Information Preservation, Information Ethics and Information Accessibility) vis-à-vis their relevance in Southeast Asia. They are expected to:

Participants will also review the five priorities of IFAP (Information for Development, Information Literacy, Information Preservation, Information Ethics and Information Accessibility) vis-à-vis their relevance in Southeast Asia. - identify policy issues and gaps in pursuing the common goal of universal access to information and knowledge, necessary for building inclusive knowledge societies;
- propose policy options and a programme agenda in promoting universal access to the Internet; and
- develop national and sub-regional action plans needed for the successful implementation of the five IFAP priorities.
The Information for All Programme was established by UNESCO to provide a framework for international co-operation and partnerships in ‘building an information society for all’. IFAP focuses on ensuring that all people have access to information they can use to improve their lives. An Intergovernmental Council comprising 26 Member States is elected to guide the Programme in its planning and implementation. IFAP is part of UNESCO and serves to promote the achievement of its goals.
