Preparation for Launch of Latin America and Caribbean Heritage Portal

19-02-2004 (Quito)
The city of Cartagena, one of the five UNESCO world heritage sites in Colombia, hosted last week the “First Regional Workshop for Editors of the Latin American and Caribbean Heritage Portal” preparing a new web service on regional cultural heritage that is scheduled to be launched in about six month.
The Workshop, which was organized by the UNESCO Office in Quito, trained 38 experts from 18 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to become portal editors researching, compiling and publishing information on their countries’ tangible and intangible heritage. The editors will also be promoting the project in their countries creating a network of collaborators.

The new web based service aims at providing a regional vision of heritage in Latin America and the Caribbean through a single entry point to information on all types of heritage that until now can only be found isolated on different websites. The portal’s computing platform that supports Spanish, Portuguese and English versions of the website has been developed by Alfa-Redi, an NGO of “cyber-attorneys”.
