Spanish communication giant PRISA partners with UNESCO to promote freedom of expression and teacher training

UNESCO

Paris, 3 February – UNESCO and the Spanish communication group PRISA signed a cooperation agreement on 2 February to promote shared values including freedom of expression, press freedom, safety of journalists and education, especially teacher training.

Under the agreement, UNESCO and PRISA – one of biggest Spanish language groups dealing with information, education and entertainment – will undertake joint activities for World Radio Day, celebrated each 13 February, and World Press Freedom Day, celebrated annually on 3 May. They will also develop initiatives to promote the expansion and improvement of education in Latin America, notably via teacher training and the optimal use of pedagogical resources and technology. Finally, through its network of newspapers and radio stations PRISA will provide coverage of UNESCO’s priority issues and activities.

“UNESCO has every reason to be delighted with its new partnership with PRISA, whose influence extends not only to Spain, but throughout Latin America,” said UNESCO Director- General Irina Bokova. “Santillana – the group’s education publishing house – El Pais, its flagship newspaper, or the more than one thousand radio stations that make up Prisa Radio, will be invaluable allies for training teachers and defending the safety of journalists,” she added.

PRISA CEO Juan Luis Cebran said “this agreement allows us to establish a stronger relationship with UNESCO in the area of education. It makes our two organizations allies in the quest to improve the quality of education in Latin America. With it, we are also actively committing ourselves to the defense of freedom of expression and of the press – which are the guarantees of pluralist and democratic societies.”
