The “Freedom of expression in the Information Society” report now available

19-12-2002 ()
A true information society cannot be conceived without guaranteeing freedom of expression and in particular freedom of the press and the media. This is one of the main conclusions issued from the “Freedom of Expression in the Information Society” symposium final report that is now available both in French and English versions.
Organized by the French National Commission for UNESCO in cooperation with UNESCO, the “Freedom of Expression in the Information Society” international symposium was held in the Organization’s headquarters, the 15-16 November 2002, and the final report gathers the most important conclusions that the invited experts formulated.

All the aspects of freedom of expression and its relationship to the information society are evoked, from the challenges of participation and inclusion to the possible forms of international co-operation. What are the opportunities in terms of citizenship, democracy and creativity but also the dangers and restrictions that threaten the freedom of expression in the information society? What about the means of regulation? All these questions are addressed in the report that aims at being a basis of reflexion on this very important issue.
