Conference on information ethics in Africa to take place next week in Botswana

UNESCO sponsors an international conference on information ethics in Africa, which will be hosted by the University of Botswana on 6 and 7 September 2010 in Gaborone. The third in the series of such events, the conference will focus on research and future development of African information ethics curricula.
Entitled ‘Teaching Information Ethics in Africa: Current Status, Opportunities and Challenges’, the conference will be attended by approximately 60 experts in information ethics from Africa, North America and Europe. Representatives of African universities from Central African Republic, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe will report on the situation with information ethics in their institutions.
The need for information ethics curricula in Africa will also be presented from the perspective of governments, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and UNESCO. Local students and other interested parties in Botswana are invited to attend the conference alongside the international scholars.
The first African Information Ethics Conference was held in Tshwane, South Africa, in 2007. The attendees agreed to form a network of professionals interested in information ethics from an African perspective - the African Network for Information Ethics (ANIE), to further research in this area and to contribute to fulfill the ideals as spelled out in the Tshwane declaration.
In 2009 the workshop on Information Ethics and e-Government took place in Pretoria (South Africa), in the framework of UNESCO’s Information for All Programme (IFAP).
The main outcome of the upcoming conference in Gaborone is expected to be a roadmap for developing the ever first information ethics curriculum for Africa to provide a critical framework for considering such issues as:
moral traditions;
information privacy;
information lifecycle with regard to ownership and copyright,;
access to knowledge;
intercultural ethics;
corporate social responsibility, etc.
