Second Caribbean Screening Seminar for Excellence in Public Television
"Contributing to a Caribbean Film & Television Industry: Opportunities and Pitfalls"
Opportunities for sharing and critiquing innovative initiatives in the film and video professions in the Caribbean provided at the UNESCO sponsored “Second Caribbean Screening and Seminar for excellence in public television”, that took place in Kingston, Jamaica from 2 to 4 November 2002.
This event was staged, as was the First Screening and Seminar in 2000, within the context of the Jamaica Doctor Bird Awards celebrations to honour Jamaicans and other Caribbean film and television broadcasting personalities at home and abroad.
The Screening and Seminar that was conducted in association with INPUT and other local and regional institutions, brought together both local and international Caribbean filmmakers and television producers in a single forum to expose their work through discussions and constructive criticism.
Under the theme "Contributing to a Caribbean Film & Television Industry: Opportunities and Pitfalls", specific attention was given to appropriate strategies for refining the product, using more economic means, identifying market and distribution outlets as well as overcoming the ever present challenge to the overall development of the industry, namely, establishment of the necessary policy and regulatory framework on the part of national governments.
INPUT Committee members and nominees of the Doctor Bird Awards 2002 were also expected to share their expertise and knowledge with the professionals present. Greater networking foundations were laid, particularly in light of the new website/portal of the Caribbean Film and Television industry, and concrete commitments encouraged with a view to more joint productions.
The Screening and Workshop was open to professional film and video makers: writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, actors, educational, training and promotional institutions from both public and private stations, including community television and cable channels. Interested members of the public were also expected to attend.
