The First Lady of Senegal Viviane Wade and UNESCO Dakar Office Director Armoogum Parsuramen inaugurated a community radio in the Senegalese village of Mbissao last week. UNESCO donated a so called suitcase radio - a portable FM station - and 40 oil lamps comprising an FM receiver powered by the heat of the flame.
"We made these donations to the Association presided by Madame Wade, "Education – Santé" (Education and Health), because we were so impressed by her approach to community education" explained UNESCO's Stella Hughes.
The community radio station is located in the village community school in Mbissao, set up a year ago by the Association with Moroccan funding. The school caters for 85 village children, who follow the national curriculum in French but are also taught in Wolof and learn to respect and value their local culture. The children have a computer room, a vegetable garden and learn to take care of livestock.
The radio station is staffed by volunteers from the community. It will broadcast programmes focusing on local development and cultural topics and will also provide a strong link between the schoolchildren's' parents and the school project. The school's four teachers live on the premises and will make weekly programmes telling the listeners about the week in school.
UNESCO plans to help Mbissao community radio become a community multimedia centre by adding a public telecentre facility.
