Regional hydrological research requires easy access to reliable data from a large geographical area by users who are located in several countries. To achieve this objective, UNESCO Jakarta and the IHP Regional Steering Committee for Southeast Asia and the Pacific established the Asian Pacific Water Archive in 1999. This initiative is to be considered as one of the most important within the framework of the AP-FRIEND project, with a strong potential to grow over the years to come. The Archive is Internet-based and consists of a series of nodes in various countries linked to the central node established at the Regional Humid Tropics Hydrology and Water Resources Centre for Southeast Asia and the Pacific in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At present, two country nodes are operational: one is located at the Yamanashi University in Japan and the other at the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia.
The Archive mostly contains hydro-meteorological data-types (stream flow, precipitation, evaporation and others) and water resources related information collected for IHP and AP-FRIEND activities carried out by participating countries. It is meant to assemble data for selected river basins in each country, including daily and monthly time series. Currently the Archive stores data for 46 basins in 12 countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region. In the near future a much higher quantity and range of data will be archived.
