Training Women Journalists in the Gulf

In reply to the growing need of women journalists in the Gulf region to use effectively ICT for their professional development, the UNESCO Chair for Communication Technology and Journalism for Women of the Dubai Women’s College, recently organized a three-day training programme for twenty-two Arab women journalists and educators from the United Arab Emirates.
The workshop (22-24 May 2005) acquainted participants with strategies and techniques for more effective use of the internet and technology in journalism. Participants were also introduced to web surfing and data and news retrieval techniques from various internet sources as well as how to evaluate Internet information resources.
Workshop participants also learned about most recent developments in the IT world and some of the latest applications on the rise, such as the blogging phenomenon. The UNESCO Chair at Dubai Women’s College, which promotes professional education and training for journalists and media practioners with a special interest in enabling women to develop careers in media in the United Arab Emirates and throughout the Arab region uses technology as a gender equalizer.
