UNESCO Launches the Communication and Information Policy Framework for Kenya

UNESCO, in cooperation with the government of Kenya and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launches the Communication and Information Policy Framework for Kenya. This project has been planned for the duration of five years by UNDP within its UNDAF objective of Enhanced capacities of key national and local institutions for improved governance.
The project aims at enhancing communication and information among the stakeholders of the Kenyan society, as well as the role of the media in supporting an efficient, transparent and accountable public sector. It includes an education component aiming to build institutional capacity of national and sub-national bodies through short-term training of media practitioners and government officials in Investigative and Online Journalism. The project will also support media training institutions in Kenya. Danida and Sida have already pledged funds for this project and several major donors are expected to join the initiative.
The three partners intend to initiate multi-sector discussions on the harmonisation and improvement of communication and information flows among the main stakeholders namely the State, the civil society and the private sector (including the private media).
The forum for the launching was attended by participants from the government, the media, international donor agencies, as well as by representatives of the civil society.
It is expected that this project will enhance the capacity of the national information and communication sector to play its role effectively in supporting the national focus on efficiency, transparency and accountability of all sectors. The attainment of such objective will be done through the increase of professional excellence in national collection and dissemination of news and information on sustainable development and poverty reduction.
