Innovation and Research
Innovation and research are crucial to the effective development of Community Multimedia Centres (CMCs). CMCs seek to make strategic use of a wide range of new and traditional information and communication technologies (ICTs) in order to promote the social, cultural and economic development of their local communities and to empower individuals. In many ways, this is a ground-breaking area. CMC development is supported by a number of innovatory approaches and by a growing body of research work. UNESCO seeks to build innovation networks and partnerships in all of these activities and engages in extensive knowledge-sharing and best-practice guidance. Research and innovation activities include the following:-

- Ethnographic Action Research - a participatory, field-based monitoring and evaluation methodology - is helping CMCs to adapt and improve the ways in which they use ICTs in their specific local context, while also providing extremely rich and varied data that contributes to regular research publications (see Documents). Partners include academic institutions and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs)http://unescodelhi.nic.in/publications/ear.pdf

- eNRICH is an innovative software tool developed for CMCs with the specific needs of grass-roots structures and local content development and exchange in mind. Partners include the National Informatics Centre, India, and OneWorld International http://www.unesco.org/webworld/portal/software/enrich/enrich.exe

- The Multimedia Training Kit initiative takes an innovatory approach to training materials development by bringing partners together to pool, share and jointly develop a complete suite of open access, workshop-ready modules, thus breaking with the trend of proprietory training tools produced and owned by single institutions. Partners include international NGOs, bilateral and multilateral development agencies http://www.itrainonline.org/itrainonline/mmtk/#English

- Community broadcasting is at the core of the CMC concept and UNESCO is supporting studies on the impact of community radio, including on issues of gender and of national languages (see Documents). Partners include academic institutions and international development partners
