    A true information society cannot be conceived without guaranteeing freedom of expression and in particular freedom of the press and the media. This is one of the main conclusions issued from the “Freedom of Expression in the Information Society” symposium final report that is now available both in French and English versions.

    A consultation meeting on “Challenges and Opportunity of the Information Society” for Central America
    A consultation meeting on “Challenges and Opportunity of the Information Society” with representatives from Central American countries was held from 29 to 31 October 2002 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on invitation of UNESCO and ITU, with the cooperation of Hondutel (Honduras Telecommunications Company) and the Government of Honduras to discuss the political, social and educational challenges of the Information Society and to contribute to the preparation of the region for the World Summit on the Information Society.

    UNESCO's International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) will fund 40 new media projects in developing countries. This was the main outcome of the meeting of the Bureau of its Intergovernmental Council that took place last week at the Organization’s Headquarters in Paris, under the chair of Torben Krogh (Denmark).

    UNESCO Trains Computer Trainers in Afghanistan
    More than a dozen staff and students of Kabul University have received specialized instruction from UNESCO trainers in the use of Internet and software applications. The course, conducted by Sayed Latif, IT trainer with the UNESCO Kabul office, was designed to prepare a group of new trainers who could then train others.

    Kyrgyzstan has now joint the some 40 countries worldwide that have created National Committees of the Memory of the World Programme. The decision was taken earlier this month in Bishek, when representatives of Kyrgyz heritage institutions met under the umbrella of the country's National Commission for UNESCO.

    UNESCO today signed a contract with a British firm for the provision of news reception, processing, transmitting and archiving software to the Tunisian News Agency (TAP). UNESCO's Intergovernmental Programme for the Development of Communication provided US$70,000 and the French Government contributed a further US$100,000.

    The development of IDAMS, UNESCO's software package for numerical information processing and statistical analysis, as an open source model is presently being discussed by a task force of the IDAMS International Technical Advisory Group (ITAG). IDAMS is a software package for the validation, manipulation and statistical analysis of data, developed by the UNESCO Secretariat in co-operation with international experts.

    Integrating traditional and new communication and information technologies for development is the aim of a Caribbean regional project that UNESCO recently launched in Kingston, Jamaica. The new initiative has the objective of making information and knowledge sources more accessible to selected marginalized communities in urban, rural and remote areas through the provision of ICTs including ICT training.

    The Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive recently announced that it has begun a major project to make its films accessible online. 112 films are now accessible. Over the next five years approximately 100 films will be added annually until over 500 full films will be viewable over the Internet.
