IT for Video Production: Caribbean Workshop Held in Curacao

A workshop of the Caribbean Interactive Network for Video Producers (CARINET) on "IT as a tool for video productions" in Willemstad, Curacao earlier this month was "a godsend for Caribbean producers wishing to learn more about the latest technological developments for video production", says Jocelyne Josiah of UNESCO's Kingston Office.
The workshop, organized by the PODEGE Foundation with UNESCO support in Willemstad, Curacao from 2 to 6 September 2002 was a resounding success for both organizers and participants alike. It set a trend by showcasing trainers from amongst the best in expertise and training institutions in video and television production in the Caribbean, for the benefit of the fifteen participants from Jamaica, Cuba and Curacao. "The workshop was groundbreaking in its resourcefulness and demonstrated commitment in forging the role, which he Network has set itself" according to Josiah.
As a direct result, Manuel Iglesias Perez of the International School for Film and TV in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, has been invited to conduct a full course on non-linear editing for Caribbean video producers in Curacao at the beginning of 2003.
Participants also recommended that:
· CARINET members strive to carry out feasibility studies and analyses for the on-line commercialization of their productions (e-commerce),
· Increased efforts be made to publish information about video production in the region on the Network's website at: www.carinet.islagrande.cu
· CARINET continue to coordinate and deliver regular courses for Network members, in order to acquire more in-depth knowledge and further professional skills
· Efforts be intensified in the search for new members
· Major emphasis be placed on the elimination of language barriers, as requested by the participants from Jamaica
· Action be renewed in the identification of possible financial sources
· CARINET seek to establish contacts with organizations and projects relating to its own goals and aspirations with a view to securing long lasting alliances and possibilities for professional cooperation and development
The period August/September 2003 has been foreseen for the organization, once more in Curacao of the Third CARINET Workshop. This is set to coincide with the next Annual General Assembly of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, also set to take place in Curacao at that time.
The Caribbean Interactive Network for Videoproducers (CARINET) is the brainchild of a UNESCO-supported "Meeting of Experts on the State of Popular Video in Latin America and the Caribbean on the threshold of the 21st century", held in Cuba in 1997. The Network came into being a year ago in 2001 with a grant from the International Programme for the Development of Communication, under the Cuba regional project entitled: "Creation of a network of Centres for the training, transmission and distribution of videoprogrammes for popular television", executed by Mundo Latino. Its founding member are: PODEGE Foundation in (Curaçao), Mundo Latino, (Cuba), Banyan Limited, (Trinidad & Tobago) and the Creative Production Training Center (Jamaica).
Since its introduction into cyberspace, the Network has striven o maintain its objectives be they on-line publication of material in English, French and Spanish, relevant to popular television in the region or the First Workshop held last September in Cuba to launch the projected yearly offering of hands-on training events.
"The success of the present CARINET workshop is a demonstration of the dynamics of information access and empowerment of small individual groups and the potential of their effects on development" says Joselyn Josiah.
