Today, the Centre Africain de Perfectionnement des Journalistes et Communicateurs (CAPJC) in Tunis celebrates its 20th anniversary. In his congratulatory message to the Management and Staff of the Centre, UNESCO Director General Koïchiro Matsuura hails the centre as an "international centre of excellence for the training of communication experts".
The CAPJC was established on 7 February 1983 in Tunis and has during its 20 years of existence trained over 6,000 trainees from 76 countries. UNESCO's International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) has supported many of the training activities and assisted with the purchase of training equipment.
In his message; Koïchiro Matsuura stresses the importance of continuous and lifelong education in all fields indicating that training is the key to development. He said "The advent of the knowledge society and the continuous developments in the field of communication and information mean that personnel in these areas need to retrain in order to be relevant in their fields."
The Director General Matsuura also underlines that it has not been difficult for CAPJC and UNESCO since they share lifelong training as a common objective.
