11-12-2003 ()
In the framework of the World Electronic Media Forum - a major side event of the World Summit on Information Society - UNESCO organized a workshop on Public Service Broadcasting held on December 11, 2003 in Palexpo, Geneva.
Almost 150 broadcasters and broadcasting organizations, media professionals, decision makers and representatives of the civil society from all over the world had an intense debate on the current challenges of PSB, its role in promoting education, cultural diversity and social inclusion, as well as its principles, best practices and guidelines in the digital age.
The participants to the workshop adopted recommendations and a statement, stressing the need to enhance editorially independent PSB in a form suited to meet challenges of the knowledge societies in the 21th century. PSB should reflect the multiethnic and multicultural nature of contemporary societies and spread awareness of multidimensional political citizenship.
It should provide universal access to information and knowledge through quality and diverse content reflecting the needs, concerns and expectations of the various target audiences, help develop an inclusive public sphere as a forum for debate on policy issues, promote cultural diversity, as well as to enhance its educational function.
The workshop emphasized that PSB should seek and encourage the advice of civil society associations in the determination of policies and priorities for programming.
