Public Service Broadcasting Workshop in Kazakhstan
03-02-2003 ()
Public Service Broadcasting should be for the public, owned by the public and managed by the public. This is the motto of a two-day seminar on "Legal, Administrative and Financial Aspects of Public Service Broadcasting (PSB)" that started yesterday in Kazakhstan's Capital Almaty as a follow-up event to another UNESCO seminar on PSB in Bishkek in July 2002.
Organized by the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), the News Agency "Khabar" and UNESCO, the participants of the seminar look at PSB in Kazakhstan as a vital component of the broadcasting sector and as an essential contribution to democratic society.
The seminar's focus is on the current issues, concerns, challenges and potentials in relation to legal, administrative and financial aspects of PS, particularly in the context of convergence and commercialization.
While discussing experiences and challenges faced by PSB organizations in Central Asia, the participants of the meeting are expected to adopt recommendations today that may be taken into consideration by Khabar and Kazakh Government to establish PSB models in Kazakhstan.
