UNESCO DIRECTOR-GENERAL CONDEMNS MURDER OF ALGERIAN JOURNALIST

Paris, 10 January {No. 96-2} - UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor today condemned the murder of an Algerian journalist.

Mohamed Mekati, a journalist with the daily El Moudjahid, died today after being shot three times Tuesday evening near his home, according to media reports.

"I must condemn this barbarous murder of still another member of the Algerian press corps," Mr Mayor said. "UNESCO will continue to oppose forcefully all attempts to stifle press freedom anywhere in the world, and to support journalists who carry out their task of informing the public. I extend my condolences to the family and colleagues of Mr Mekati."
