- The development of national information policies and the preservation of the documentary heritage are two of the many areas, in which UNESCO and Belarus have agreed to work together in the future according to a recently signed Memorandum of Cooperation.
The agreement signed by Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikhail Khvostov and UNESCO's Director General Koïchiro Matsuura in Belarus' Capital Minsk on the occasion of an official visit of Mr Matsuura to Belarus from 8 to 10 July 2002, also foresees the development of human resources in tune with the information age within the framework of UNESCO's Information for All Programme.
Under the umbrella of UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme, the Agreement foresees cooperation in the area of preservation of digital documents and access to documentary heritage. It also includes the promotion of regional cooperation to facilitate access to regional archives, libraries and other document repositories.
The Memorandum also includes agreements of cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture highlighting the need for multidisciplinary strategies aimed at reinforcing sustainable development.
