ICTs and Gender. A Forum in Malaysia

Understanding gender-related barriers to ICT access and optimising opportunities: these are the main objectives of a forum on ICTs and gender that a consortium of organizations, including UNESCO and ITU is organizing from 27 to 30 May 2003 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as part of the preparation of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).
The Forum aims at identifying ways women in developing countries can gain increased access to and take maximum advantage of information and communication technologies and to raise awareness on gender-related barriers to ICT access.
It is expected that the participants will make recommendations on gender aspects of ICT related to access, confidence and security, health and education and SME entrepreneurship.
The meeting is also intended to discuss projects and initiatives, which will be incorporated into an issues paper to be used as input into WSIS the World Summit on the Information Society.
In addition to UNESCO, sponsors of the conference are the Government of Malaysia, the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), the Asian Pacific Women's Information Network Center (APWINC), the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), the Global Knowledge Partnership GKP), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia & the Pacific (UNESCAP).
