Following the successful Reel Peace project in Sri Lanka in 2002-2004, a new phase of the project in Sierra Leone that was launched in 2004 draws to an end.
The project in Sierra Leone, as the one in Sri Lanka, aimed at contributing to cultural and social reconciliation after the end of the civil war, whilst simultaneously developing much needed media skills.
The project started with scriptwriting training opportunities and ended with the current exhibition and distribution of the resulting six short films.
The project, implemented by NGO ScriptNet, received support from UNESCO, the Commonwealth Media Development Fund and the British Council in Freetown.
Following a competitive scriptwriting contest, six of the most promising scripts were selected as a basis for a directing and technical training course. At the end of the course, production grants were given to the producer/director teams to make their short films. Through October and November 2005 additional production training was given to the selected participants.
The final six films produced are; ‘Toy Gun’ Directed by Munda Pangu, ‘The Outcasts’ Directed by Brian James, ‘King of The Stalls’ Directed by Jonathan Bundu, ‘The Victims’ Directed by Mohammed Sheriff, ‘Hole in the Wall’ Directed by Sarah King and ‘Scars’ Directed by John Solo Fofanah. All of the directors are first time directors.
As a project ScriptNet Sierra Leone has set a platform from which a number of new entrants into Film Production can more confidently move forward with their intended careers. It is also motivating to see how the skills gained are already being applied to the continued development of media content which will deliver stories from this culturally rich and fascinating nation.
The films will be soon available on UNESCO’s Audiovisual E-platform for international distribution.
