Strengthening freedom of the press in Central Asia

02-10-2006 (Almaty)
The integration of the Central Asian Freedom of the Press and Expression Network into similar regional and global settings was taken a step further at a Seminar that UNESCO and Adil Soz Foundation recently organized in Kazakhstan’s former capital Almaty.
The two-day seminar that was held from 14 to 15 September 2006 brought together 20 experts to discuss ways to better coordinate global, regional and national freedom of expression networks, make information exchange more effective and discuss legal education objectives and prospects for fostering the professional solidarity of journalists.

Participants included heads of media advocacy NGOs and media outlets from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan with Irada Huseynova (Center for Journalism in Extreme Situations, Moscow), Corina Cepoi (Independent Journalism Center), Natalya Steblyuk (Adil Soz Foundation) and Rinata Alibekova (IFEX) as their trainers.

The seminar ended with the adoption of a plan to ‘strengthen the CA freedom of expression network,’ which addresses high propriety goals. Among them are to actively use information and communication technologies, to hold advocacy and legal trainings to improve journalists’ legal skills, to lobby for democratic changes to the operating legislation.

The seminar was held by the UNESCO Office in Almaty for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as part of Communication and Information programme, in collaboration with the International Foundation for Protection of Freedom of Speech, within the scope of the project “Strengthening Central Asian Freedom of Expression Network.”
