UNESCO/CHN cultural heritage workshop starts today in Tehran

05-09-2006 (Tehran)
The role of the media in preserving cultural heritage is on the agenda of a three day workshop starting today in Iran's capital Tehran. The event entitled “Globalization, Conflict and Cultural Heritage: The Role of the Media in Introducing and Protecting Cultural Heritage” is organized by UNESCO and the Cultural Heritage News Agency (CHN).
Since recent events such as wars, conflicts, natural disasters, the rapid trend of urbanization and industrialization have put the situation of cultural heritage sites all over the world at risk.

The media workshop starting today in Tehran aims at providing training on cultural heritage issues and development of a strategic communication plan in partnership with Iranian media to represent culture in member countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).

In addition to Iran, ten other countries from the OIC Member States which are active in the fields of cultural heritage and media including Afghanistan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Qatar, and Syria have been invited to participate in the workshop.

The workshop will provide training in cultural heritage issues and the role of cultural heritage in supporting sustainable tourism as well as mapping a strategy for media representation of cultural heritage in the OIC countries.

The subjects which will be discussed at the workshop are as follow: Why culture matters in and after a crisis: Issues for the Media; Women and cultural identity; Digital Media and Cultural Heritage; and The role of cultural heritage in supporting sustainable tourism.

The Workshop aims to increase diversity of content in the media of Iran and the participating countries as well as changing views of government officials and media staff to understanding and promoting cultural issues. Creating a pool of media professionals committed to portraying the cultural diversity and dynamism of the region, and increasing the capacity of Iranian journalists to provide training and coordinate reportage on cultural diversity will be the other impacts of the workshop.

As the first media workshop in Iran, UNESCO will integrate this project with its existing communication strategy to build the capacity of national and regional media professionals. The project will also strengthen the capacity of CHN as a private news agency to organize such initiatives and build on lessons learned to coordinate the project. By developing a Strategic Communication Plan at the end of the workshop, UNESCO will ensure that CHN will have a blueprint to sustain the momentum built during the workshop.

The training workshop will be followed by half day cultural tour with media professionals from selected OIC countries. A major outcome of the workshop will be to develop a strategic communication plan on media representation of culture of the participating OIC countries.
