12-02-2009 (New Delhi) International Media Mission assessed press freedom in Nepal
UNESCO, in response to requests from local media in Nepal, took part in the 6th International Media Mission to the country, along with other media and press freedom organizations, such as the International Federation of Journalists, Article 19, International Media Support, the World Press Freedom Committee, Reporters without Borders and the International Press Institute, who have been closely monitoring the Nepali transition vis-à-vis the press freedom and freedom of expression.
11-02-2009 (Paris) Inauguration in Buenos Aires of International Centre for the Promotion of Human Rights
On 13 February, UNESCO’s Director-General, Koïchiro Matsuura, will preside over the inauguration in Buenos Aires, Argentina, of the International Centre for the Promotion of Human Rights. Under the auspices of UNESCO, it will operate from buildings formerly occupied by ESMA, the Navy Mechanics School. During Argentina’s military dictatorship (1976-1983), ESMA became the largest centre for the detention and execution of civilians.
10-02-2009 (Quito) UNESCO-supported Latin American audio platform continues to expand
Radioteca is an online portal for Latin American radio stations that was set up with the financial support of UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). This service offers now more than 5,000 downloadable audios and has over 85,000 visitors per month, with an average of 3,000 hits per day. Most of the 1,500 registered radio stations are based in Latin America; some of them are located in the Caribbean.

06-02-2009 (Ramallah) UNESCO strengthens Palestinian participatory democracy and public dialogue
UNESCO is starting a two year project to foster participatory dialogue between Palestinian citizens and the decision-makers. The aim is to strengthen democratic processes through citizen journalism, blogging and public debates in new and electronic media. The project, developed by the UNESCO Office in Ramallah and the AMIN Media Network, has been established thanks to a grant from the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) after a highly competitive global call for proposals.

On 5 February 2009, the Moroccan National Observatory on Children’s Rights (ONDE), the UNESCO Office in Rabat and Microsoft Morocco will launch their guide on the role of parents in the digital era. The launch will take place during the event organized by the three partners under the Presidency of her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Meryem, at Golden Tulip Farah, in Rabat, Morocco, with the aim to sensitise parents and teachers on the importance of child cyber-protection.

Today, the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, will award the 2008 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Education to the Chinese and Egyptian laureates, Zhang Deming and Hoda Baraka. Mr Matsuura will present each of the laureates with a diploma and US$25,000 during the ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters, in the presence of the Minister of Education of Bahrain, Majed Bin Ali Al-Noaimi.
