UNESCO is to host an international meeting at its Headquarters in Paris on 17 December 2009 to further the inclusion of information and communication technologies (ICT) as part of national development strategies, and to highlight the valuable role that ICT can play in reaching the Millennium Development Goals.
Entitled "Economic and Social Councils, National Development Strategies, Participatory Democracy and ICT for Development", the meeting is organized in collaboration with both the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the International Association of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (AICESIS).

Representatives of economic and social councils from all regions of the world, schools of public administration and political science, private sector institutions, as well as experts in governance, citizens’ engagement and ICT, will come together to discuss possible action to strengthen the engagement of civil society in national development policies, encourage access to ICT and to dialogue with Economic and Social Councils (ESCs) in this regard.

The meeting also aims to develop networking and information sharing in order to build a Knowledge Base on Governance, Citizens’ Engagement and Uses of ICT for Development. The Knowledge Base will embrace contributions from all stakeholders and will be presented at the United Nations MDGs progress meeting in September 2010.

UNESCO is a lead facilitator of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) action lines which aim to build a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented information society, placing ICT at the centre of this agenda.

Participants of the meeting will meet for two days, the second day (18 December) being hosted by the French Economic, Social and Environment Council at the Palais d’Iéna in Paris.
