UNESCO Fosters Pluralist Media Development in Arab Region

06-12-2004 (Paris)
Arab media experts and professionals start today a three day meeting in Doha, Qatar, to discuss media challenges facing the region. The meeting that is organized by UNESCO will help to identify priorities for fostering pluralist electronic and printed press and examine project proposals submitted by Arab countries to UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).
The discussions, involving Arab media experts, will contribute to the development of projects based on the needs of the region. These projects will be presented to the IPDC Intergovernmental Council for consideration and approval.

Commenting on the meeting, Abdul Waheed Khan, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, said “it is a major step forward in fulfilling UNESCO’s mandate for promoting communication development with special emphasis on pluralist and independent media”.

During roundtables on two consecutive days, the experts will assess more than 25 project proposals, contribute ideas, comments and suggestions to improve the quality and relevance of the IPDC media development projects. A seminar will conclude the meeting and build on the previous days’ discussions.

The IPDC priorities, as approved by the Intergovernmental Council and endorsed by the UNESCO General Conference, are projects which promote freedom of expression and pluralism, develop community media, develop human resources, and promote international partnerships.
