UNESCO to Support Production of Eight Films on Human Rights and Tolerance

UNESCO has now selected eight proposals for film productions for its new project “ICT-enhanced Public Service Broadcasting: Contributing to the development of human rights, peace, tolerance and the fight against discrimination” (ICT@PSB). The selection was made out of 200 submissions that UNESCO received further to an international call to television and film professionals earlier this year.
After a careful study of all these proposals, UNESCO made the following selection:
Mothers on Wheels (Argentina) (fight against discrimination and gender approach)
Olho da Rua (Brazil) (human rights, peace, tolerance and the fight against discrimination)
The Place I Call Home (Egypt) (intercultural communication)
Meena (India) (Millenium Development Goals, such as education for all)
Cualquier Ciudad (Colombia) (tolerance and intercultural communication)
Leaving the Box (Pakistan) (intercultural communication and freedom of expression)
Aziza, un amour pendant la guerre (Cameroun) (peace)
A good investment (Denmark) (Millennium Development Goals, education for all, women’s empowerment and gender equality)
The selection criteria were based on the analysis of the treatment of the main themes to be addressed, as announced in the “call for proposals”, (human rights, peace, tolerance, fight against discrimination, the UN Millennium Development Goals, particularly poverty-alleviation, gender equality and women empowerment, freedom of expression and intercultural communication) as well as on other considerations, such as the diversity of production genres and the geographical balance.
One of the project’s intentions is to avoid the reproduction of conventional approaches and formats to development and social issues, some of which are over-exposed, and instead aims to explore new, challenging and creative ways of encouraging reflection and debate on development through an innovative use of the audiovisual language.
UNESCO will contact the production teams in the next coming days in order to formalize the terms of reference of future cooperation, which will also involve working in close collaboration with UNESCO’s executive producer for the production of this series.
At the end of this initiative, UNESCO will produce and distribute a series of audiovisual productions targeted to all publics, but particularly for young adults between the ages of 20 to 35. The productions will be made available through the media, on DVD and on-line before the end of 2005.
