Safety of Journalists in Conflict Areas. UNESCO Workshops Concludes in Jordan

Helping journalists to acquire survival skills and deal with hostile environments as they cover news in conflict zones was the aim of a workshop on “Safety of Journalists in Conflict Areas”, in Amman, Jordan, that UNESCO and the “Dialogue Conference Center”, a Jordanian NGO, organized for some 40 journalists from ten Arab states.
As a rapidly increasing number of journalists are being targeted and killed around the globe while on duty, the workshop, that was held from 14-16 December 2004, dealt with the role of media in conflict areas, and aimed at training journalists on safety issues in order to increase their awareness and skills in dealing with critical situations in conflict areas while covering news and events in conflict zones.
The workshop also included visits to the National Center for De-mining and the Royal Engineering Defense for a closer look at working with de-mining and dealing with environments where the danger of landmines, explosives, and bombs exists.
the journalists from Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestinian Authority, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Syria attending the workshop said that they have become better equipped and prepared to deal with critical situations in conflict areas.
Participants also said that the workshop helped to establish networks among them that will help improve their security and safety measures before and while being in conflict areas through the exchange of experiences and case studies.
