Supporting Research

The Communication and Information Sector (CI) supports research studies on communication and information issues of relevance to the Sector’s mandate. This action is designed primarily to contribute to the advancement of knowledge, norms and standards, awareness and better understanding of emerging issues in the information society.
The Communication and Information Sector has enhanced its support for research activities and links with the international community of researchers and scholars working in the Sector’s areas of mandate. The Sector’s support aims at contributing to UNESCO’s functions as a laboratory of ideas, standards and norms on issues pertinent to the Organization’s fields of competence. The research action also aims at providing the empirical basis for appropriate framework and approaches in formulating, implementing, assessing and evaluating operational activities which respond to the communication and information needs of Member States. The Sector supports research studies and enquiry addressing communication and information issues such as:

  • Press freedom, media independence and pluralism
  • Media, terrorism, peace and democracy
  • Social, cultural and political impact of ICTs
  • Cultural and linguistic diversity in the media and information networks
  • Media and social participation
  • Community multi-media centres and multi-purpose telecentres
  • ICTs, distance and media education
  • Public service broadcasting and production of local content
  • Communication and information policies
  • Access to ICTs and knowledge

  • The CI Sector carries out its research action in partnership with international and regional bodies and networks of communication and information researchers and scholars as well as research institutions.
