UN agencies gathered to discuss communication for development

On 3 and 4 December, representatives of seven UN Organizations brainstormed a strategy that followed-up on the Recommendations concluded by the 10th UN Inter-Agency Round Table on Communication for Development (C4D) last February in Addis Ababa.
The two-day meeting reported back on advocacy measures taken since the 10th Round Table, discussed wide-ranging policy and operational issues including sustainability and effectiveness, integration through the United Nations Development Framework, capacity building needs and the biennial UN System Communication for Development Report.
UNESCO, host and convener of the Follow-Up to Addis Recommendations Meeting, warmly welcomed the Representative of the UN International Labour Organization (ILO) as a new member of the informal group. The ILO will henceforth actively participate in the Round Table and its follow-up discussions. Other participants representing the following UN Organizations reaffirmed their commitment to C4D: FAO, ILO, UNCDF, UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank and UNESCO.
Next steps were determined through specific actions including a publication on C4D, country-level pilots, planning of a C4D learning programme and Training of Trainers, online C4D Community of Practice, and shaping the UN System Communication for Development Report for the UN General Assembly.
The overall organization of the 11th Inter-Agency Round Table on Communication for Development was also discussed. Participants agreed to UNDP and the World Bank’s proposal to co-host the event in Washington D.C. during the second half of 2008.
The UN Inter-Agency Round Table on Communication for Development is a biennial gathering that evolves from UN General Assembly Resolutions 50/130 and 50/172. The Round Table attributes increased importance to Communication for Development and its integration in the development of relevant projects and programmes.
