Youth and Media. A UNESCO workshop in Beirut

60 students from UNESCO Associated Schools in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Tunisia and the Palestinian Territories met recently in Lebanon’s capital Beirut for workshop to learn more about media, and their role in it.
Items on the agenda of the workshop that was held from 12 to 13 May included media and its role in creating knowledge, media and critical thinking, media and freedom of expression, and media and ethics. It was organized by UNESCO in cooperation with the Lebanese National Commission for and UNESCO and Saint George School, under the patronage of the Lebanese Minister of Information, Ghazi Aridi.

All speakers in their statements emphasized the importance of reaching youth and teaching them to address media. “UNESCO is concerned with youth to integrate their concerns and issues into the policy agendas of Member States in education, sciences, culture and communication. This will also help in creating spaces and opportunities to empower young people and to give recognition, visibility and credibility to their contributions and work”, said UNESCO’s George Awad addressing the opening of the event that was attended by Minister Aridi, Ms Saniora, Secretary-General of the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO, Saint George School Principal Alamah.
