A workshop on the use of GenISISWeb for web publishing of CDS/ISIS databases
19-10-2007 (Paris)
The Digital Library & Information Services of Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management - Kerala (IIITM-K) is organizing a national workshop on the application of GenisisWeb to create web based information services for CDS/ISIS databases. The workshop, aimed for librarians, LIS students, academia and industry members, will be held in Thiruvananthapuram, India, from 29 to 31 October 2007.
Information and Communication Technology has made profound impact on the society in general and in the field of library and information science in particular. The availability of modern ICT infrastructure has forced libraries to offer many of their services on networks, especially via the Web.
The emergence of e-only resources, an increase in demand of e-resources, and the availability of suitable communication mechanisms etc have also compelled librarians and professionals to provide electronic information services. In order to provide speedy services, libraries need to equip themselves with different tools to enable web-based information dissemination.
The provision of Web based information services is costly and often unaffordable for many libraries. Alternatively they may depend on free/low cost solutions for web based information services. The workshop will orient and train the participants in establishing and managing such services. The practice sessions will be based on GenIsisWeb. GenISIS is a state-of-the-art package used to create Web interface for CDS/ISIS databases (or its different versions) for developing applications like Digital Libraries, Web based catalogues (WebOPAC), e-Journal Gateways etc.
GenISIS is based on the Web CDS/ISIS interface WWWISIS by BIREME.
The aim of the workshop is to give practical orientation to:
develop bibliographic database using WinISIS
publish WinISIS Database over the Web
develop Digital Libraries using GenISISWeb
develop Web OPAC using GenISISWeb
develop `e-Journals Gateway´ using GenISISWeb
learn data exchange using IsisASCII
master development and maintenance of Integrated Online Library Information Systems.
Workshop will be handled by the Digital Library team of IIITMK headed by Sainul Abideen P, (VLIR Scholar, Belgium) Librarian, IIITM-K, who has developed several Web based Information Systems using GenISISWeb. Participants are expected to be proficient in using GenISISWeb after this workshop.
GENISIS is an authoring software (for Win32) for visually producing web forms to query CDS/ISIS databases. There are two versions of the tool: GenisisWeb, for web publishing and GenisisCD for developing CDRom interfaces for CDS/ISIS databases.
Micro CDS/ISIS is an advanced non-numerical information storage and retrieval software developed by UNESCO since 1985 to satisfy the need expressed by many institutions, especially in developing countries, to be able to streamline their information processing activities by using modern (and relatively inexpensive) technologies.
