Television Producers on HIV and AIDS
The Global Network of Young TV Producers on HIV and AIDS involves the participation of broadcasting organizations in Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Europe. The capacity building project aims to improve the professional competence of young television producers reporting on HIV and AIDS but also mobilizes long-term commitment of regional and sub-regional broadcasting and media training organizations in support of the prevention, treatment, and care of HIV and AIDS.
TV broadcasting and production capacities in developing countries face challenges that require the space, creativity and investigative capacity to produce and disseminate credible and reliable information to the general public. Knowledge about and exposure to HIV and AIDS issues is a precondition for all of the above. The Global Network for Young TV Producers on HIV and AIDS provides the opportunity for committed professionals to develop the expertise and initiate the drive to meet these objectives.
To date, the project has supported the training of 212 young television producers who have produced 107 broadcast items aired in 74 countries.
Project Outputs
An immediate outcome of the project is the production of quality short films and documentary scripts. The project also provides support for the creation of directories, local language manuals, and seed funding to support the talent of young television producers. Productions are packaged on DVD under a free distribution agreement and made available to broadcasting organizations and media training institutions.
Training and production
Training is an important component of the project. A standard training methodology is designed in two phases which inspires flat networking among the participants. The first phase takes place at a regional venue to guide the research and script writing process. Participants then return to their respective home country to gather footage, produce short films and at the same time participate in online peer discussions managed by the lead trainer. When the trainees meet a second time, they perform a peer review and finalize their short films. The films are then packaged on DVD format and distributed by the training institution to broadcasters for free transmission worldwide. The DVDs can also be used by activists and NGOs.
