Representatives of Government, Parliament, civil service and media agreed to improve the sharing of public information.
The workshop, held from 14 to 18 May 2007 in Tarawa, Kiribati, was funded by UNESCO's Office in Apia at the request of the Kiribati Government.
A number of practical outcomes were agreed upon and a more positive relationship has been established between these important branches of the community. In a final Communiqué, the participants stressed the great value of improving the flow of information both from, and within, the Government and the Parliament. The media adopted a draft Code of Ethics and the Kiribati Islands Media Association (KIMA) will soon be established to help improve media standards and provide a range of services to its members and the public. The meeting created a Core Group with representatives from all the sectors to guide the implementation of the recommendations of the workshop, which outline the following:
