6th session of IFAP Council opens today

The sixth session of the Intergovernmental Council for the Information for All Programme (IFAP) opens today at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. The two-day meeting will review IFAP achievements and recommend future strategic orientations for the Programme.
The current IFAP Council, comprising 24 Member States, is responsible for guiding the planning and the implementation of the Programme. During this session, it will assess the achievements that IFAP has accomplished until now, and will consider, among others, the future modalities of the operation of the Council, the improvement of IFAP visibility and the guidelines for creation of new National IFAP Committees.
The members of the Council will also discuss the future activities of the Programme in accordance with its Strategic Plan as endorsed by the UNESCO Executive Board in 2008. Infoethics and the financial situation of IFAP are also on the agenda of this session, as well as the ways for strengthening cooperation with Member States. Finally, the Council will define the areas requiring increased international cooperation and fund-raising in order to promote the further involvement of Member States in the Programme and its successful expansion and implementation.

The Information for All Programme was established in 2001 to provide a platform for international cooperation in the area of access to information and knowledge for the participation of all in the knowledge societies. IFAP focuses on ensuring that all people have access to information they can use to improve their lives. It is part of UNESCO and serves to promote the achievement of its goals.
