What is the UNESCO  Teachers’  Strategy?

It is the framework guiding UNESCO’s interventions with regard to teachers, building on achievements and lessons learned. It addresses emerging challenges and focuses on supporting teachers for quality learning. While the strategy has a global outreach, it focuses on countries with the greatest need to accelerate progress towards EFA goals.

What is the need?

The UNESCO Teachers’ Strategy aims to meet the changing needs of education globally. Achievement of quality education requires teachers of quality. To attain this, factors contributing to teachers’ development must be effectively addressed.

What are the priority areas?

Bridging the teacher gap through activities that strengthen national capacities, reinforcing teacher training institutions and teacher educators, and supporting policy formulation, monitoring and implementation

Improving teacher quality by developing standards for teachers and recommendations for use in policy development.

Informing the global debate, generating research and knowledge about effective teaching through exchanges between UNESCO practitioner networks, including the UNESCO Chairs , UNITWIN networks and the UNESCO Associated Schools Networks (ASPnet

Implementation and partnerships

Implementing the strategy involves strong coordination and cooperation between UNESCO and its major partners. The International Task Force on Teachers for EFA and the CapEFA programs play a strong role in this process.

UNESCO Teachers’ Strategy is implemented at regional and national levels, taking into consideration the particular needs of member states. It includes mechanisms for networking and peer-learning opportunities across countries and regions.
