Equipping Youth with Skills to Meet Future Demands in Labour Market

Making sure that youth are properly skilled for the future demands of the labour market was the key discussion at the first workshop on Skills Forecasting in the Mediterranean Region, held at UNESCO Headquarters on 5th and 6th November 2014.
Experts from the Warwick Institute for Employment Research and Cambridge Econometrics, country labor market experts from the Networks of Mediterranean (NET MED) Youth’s project countries as well as UNESCO colleagues from the Field Offices gathered at HQ for the event.
The workshop was aimed at exploring methodologies and challenges in anticipating skills needed by labour markets in the Mediterranean region. Participants studied existing country data, capacities in the target countries and discussed both regional and national labour market issues and challenges regarding youth transitions.
When high youth unemployment rates in the region has brought tremendous pressure on education and training systems and labour markets, the NET MED Youth project’ Employment component aims to strengthening tools and methodologies for better understanding and anticipating skills demand in the Mediterranean region.
During his opening remarks, Mr. David Atchoarena, Director of Division for Policies and Lifelong Learning Systems at UNESCO, pointed out the importance of building labour market and skills projections as one of the key policy tools.
The NET MED Youth project is implemented by UNESCO and funded by the European Union.
