Ethical Dimensions of the Information Society

12-14 March 2008, Hanoi, Vietnam
Ethical Dimensions of the Information Society

The Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, in cooperation with the Secretariat of the UNESCO and other institutional partners including the National Committees for the Information for All Programme, will organize the first Regional Conference For Asia and the Pacific on the Ethical Dimensions of the Information Society from 12-14 March 2008, in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The Conference will be an important step in a continuous effort to anchor the spirit and principles of UNESCO in capturing the full potential of the information and communication revolution for human development. This is also the significant forum for participants to discuss on accessibility, confidentiality, promotion of respect for fundamental values and principles, increasing awareness of information ethics and strategies and policies, and the preventive measures against illegal use of information - communication technologies.

Simultaneously, it provides desirable opportunity for Member States to facilitate regional synergies, to mobilise the attention around the issue of information ethics, to develop a deeper cooperation and capacity sharing among themselves and with UNESCO’s field offices. It would also be a constructive regional response to one of the three priorities of UNESCO’s Information for All Programme - Ethical, legal and societal implications of ICT.

Equally significant, the Conference will provide a new momentum to the UNESCO-initiated series of events enabling specialists and decision-makers to address the ethical dimensions of the Information Society, including UNESCO Info-ethics Congresses, the Recommendation concerning the Promotion and Use of Multilingualism and Universal Access to Cyberspace.
