16-06-2008 (Dushanbe) Training journalists to report on HIV and AIDS
The first regional HIV and AIDS training-the-trainers workshop for journalists took place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from 9 to 13 June. This five-day training activity was organized by the Central Asia AIDS Control Project (CAAP), in cooperation with the UNESCO Office in Almaty. Its objective was to prepare Central Asian reporters to run workshops for their colleagues on the coverage of HIV and AIDS related subjects.

'Tsehai Loves Learning,' an Ethiopian children's television show sponsored by UNESCO, was honoured with an award at the Prix Jeunesse International 2008 Festival. The 2008 Next Generation Prize was bestowed upon the creators of the show, Whiz Kids Workshop, a local production company that focuses on serving Ethiopia through educational media.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, has welcomed the re-launch, on 11 May 2008, of the historic Colombian publication El Espectador as a daily newspaper, following seven years during which it was published as a weekly due to financial constraints. El Espectador’s former editor-in-chief, Guillermo Cano, was killed in Bogotá in 1986, and since then he has become a symbol of press freedom worldwide. The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize was established in his memory in 1997.

16-05-2008 (Kingston) UNESCO supported children’s media literacy project completes its initial stage
The initial pilot stage of a project launched in 2007 by Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica and UNESCO to train children in media literacy has now been completed. Testing of the project material involved 910 students in 10 schools. The results of the findings and lessons learnt will soon be made available on the Caribbean Network of Information/Media Literacy Clubs website.
