South Asian Consultation on UNESCO's Model Curricula for Journalism Education is taking place in India

The Department of Communication of the University of Hyderabad, in collaboration with UNESCO, is organizing a three-day international consultation on Model Curricula for Journalism from 7 to 9 March 2008 in Hyderabad, India. This consultation is intended to discuss the adaptability of the curricula recently developed by UNESCO.
As a lead UN agency promoting free expression, UNESCO believes in the role of journalism in democracy and the consequent need for well trained journalists. This is the first consultation after the Curricula was formally launched in Singapore last year. Nearly 40 participants will discuss the curricula with a view to develop a networking mechanism in order to share resources relating to journalism teaching.
The Department of Communication of the University of Hyderabad, which is recognised as a major education and research centre in this field, is likely to play a significant role in networking and development of necessary resources.
The participants of the Consultation come mainly from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and India. Some of them are directors of press institutes. UNESCO's Jocelyne Josiah and Hara Padhy are also attending the Consultation. Editor of Himal and Nepal Times, Kunda Dixit, is the guest of honour at the inauguration ceremony, on 7 March.
Media representatives are expected to interact with the participants to discuss media and training situation in their countries.
The consultation also features two other Department events: Dr CVS Sarma memorial lecture, on the first day; and release of a book on video production, on the second day.
