The Intergovernmental Council for the Information for All Programme (IFAP) elected new Bureau members today at its 5th session at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The twenty-six members of the Council nominated Mr Karol Jakubowicz (Poland) as the Chairman of the Bureau.
Other members elected to form the Bureau are Austria, Hungary, Brazil, Thailand, Nigeria and Egypt with the representative of Jamaica as Rapporteur.

Karol Jakubowicz was until recently Director of the Strategy and Analysis Department at the National Broadcasting Council of Poland, the broadcasting regulatory authority. He also worked as a journalist and executive in the Polish press, radio and television for many years. Mr Jakubowicz has been active in the Council of Europe, where held, among other positions, that of Chairman of the Steering Committee on the Media and New Communication Services.

Mr Jakubowicz replaces Laurence Zwimpfer who served as Chairman of the IFAP Council for the last two years and to whom the Director-General of UNESCO paid tribute today for his leadership and dedication both to the Programme and to UNESCO.

The IFAP Bureau meets twice a year to appraise, select and approve projects as well as to hold thematic debates on issues of importance for the Programme.
