The Workshop provided high-level training to senior/experienced Pacific media professionals with the aim to increase the quality, frequency and prominence of reporting on climate change. It is hoped that increasing levels of awareness and understanding of the causes, effects and solutions for climate change will bring about a political will for action.

Among the issues discussed by the Workshop participants was the creation of a permanent Pacific Climate Change News Portal to serve as a central, dynamic source of all news by country and by theme on climate change issues. The Portal could be used by journalists for research and for posting their stories for peer review. It could also help development agencies to quickly estimate the status of climate change or to obtain useful contacts in the Pacific.

The 2008 Workshop is a result of the partnership between the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and UNESCO, and will be repeated throughout the medium term period. There are several ideas about the organization of the next year Workshop. It could be held during the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Pacific Conference (Tonga, February 2009), the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) General Conference (Suva, July 2009), or 2009 PCCR (October 2009).
