New UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information

Abdul Waheed Khan today takes office as UNESCO's new Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information. He replaces Alain Modoux of Switzerland, who retired on 30 June 2001.
Prior to joining UNESCO, Mr. Khan was Director, Development and Training, with the Commonwealth of Learning in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He had earlier served the COL as its Principal Communications Specialist, Educational Media and Non-formal Education.

Mr. Khan's career includes several years as Vice-Chancellor of one of the world's leading open universities, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), in New Delhi. He has been largely involved in the development of communication, distance education and education technologies and his career has also included senior positions and advisory roles with several international agencies. He previously served IGNOU as Professor and founding Director of the Communications Division, where he established a state-of-the-art educational media centre. He was also Director, Farm and Home Broadcasts, for All India Radio and initiated several innovative programmes, including the Farm School of the Air.

Mr Khan, who is of Indian nationality, holds a M.Sc. in Agriculture form Agra University (India), an M.Sc. in Agriculture Journalism (1970) and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication (1973) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (USA).
