World Press Freedom Day celebrated in Andean region

Within the framework of 3 May, World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO-Quito supports a series of initiatives in the Andean region, aimed to commemorate this date proclaimed twenty years ago in Windhoek, Namibia. Moreover, UNESCO-Quito has disseminated a press kit for the mass media, providing information concerning this celebration.
In Bolivia, UNESCO, the National Press Association (ANP) and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) organize the Forum Debate on “Press freedom and media self-regulation”, led by the Colombian expert Javier Darío Restrepo, on 29 April.
In Colombia, UNESCO-Quito commemorates 3 May with a series of activities organized in collaboration with Consejo de Redacción, Media for Peace, the Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP), the Antonio Nariño Project, Radio Nederland and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy. Several media and ICT experts, such as José Rubén Zamora, will participate in a conference that will include a panel on “new media” and a conversatorio (a professional discussion) on “The divorce between politics and media”.
In Ecuador, the Andean University Simón Bolívar, the National Union of Journalists, the Journalists’ Association of Pichincha, the Latin American Association of Radio Education (ALER), the Ecuadorian Association of Newspaper Publishers (AEDEP), NGO Radialistas Apasionadas y Apasionados and Fundamedios, with the support of UNESCO, will organize a conference on "Freedom of expression and media self-regulation mechanisms: best international practices", delivered by Mexican expert Cynthia Cárdenas, from Article 19.
UNESCO-Quito is also supporting a meeting with journalism students, organized by the University of the Americas in Quito, and a conference offered by El Universo Foundation in Guayaquil.
In Peru and Venezuela, UNESCO-Quito has disseminated materials on World Press Freedom Day to the media and civil society organizations, including the Joint Message by the UN Secretary-General, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNESCO’s Director-General, as well as information about this year’s laureate of UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2011, Iranian journalist Ahmad Zeidabadi.
Finally, UNESCO-Quito has also disseminated an interview with British human rights expert, Andrew Puddephatt, about the Role of mass media in guaranteeing freedom of expression.
