Enhancing capacities of broadcast journalists in Arab countries

Aljazeera Network and UNESCO are jointly organizing a free six-week training course in broadcast journalism (TV and radio) to be held between 26 October and 4 December 2008 in Doha, Qatar.
Twelve participants have been selected from over 900 candidates who applied for the course which was advertised for 3 weeks on Aljazeera.net, Aljazeera Sport website and on the training centre’s website.
This training course comes in line with the cooperation established between the Aljazeera Media Training and Development Centre (JMTDC) and UNESCO to support and enhance Arab media performance.
The twelve participants have been selected in conformity with the conditions agreed upon between UNESCO and JMTDC:
The sessions will be conducted by three consultants: the Canadian trainer Doug Rushton; Assef Hamidi, a news producer from Aljazeera Channel, who will cover TV journalism; and Eric El Kalache from the Radio France Internationale (RFI), who will cover radio journalism.
The TV journalism programme focuses on the following areas: writing, reporting and editing broadcast news, the essential guidelines in ethical decision-making, media coverage of multi-cultural communities, and interviewing techniques.
The radio journalism programme covers the definition of radio news reports (specifying the angle of the report and the potential guests), field work and its tools, including live commentary, in addition to sound-editing.
This training course also includes evening lectures presented by experts from Aljazeera Network on the following subjects: elocution, the language of media, in-house news reports, code of ethics and conflict reporting.
This is the fourth training course conducted in cooperation with UNESCO in order to promote Arab media. The first course, Education for All, took place in 2005 and was attended by 20 journalists from different Arab countries. The second one, Modern Broadcasting Management, was held in September 2005 and was attended by directors and assistant-directors of different Arab state and private broadcasting corporations. The third course, focusing on TV journalism, organized in December 2005, aimed at Palestinian female journalists.

- either a degree or a two-year work experience in media; and
- age not exceeding 27 years old.
