CARIBBEAN - Cuba Activities

San Andres - Cuba Beach Management Exchange

Monitoring team at Playa Mayabeque, February 2005

Sharing information and skills between islands is one of the objectives of Small Islands Voice. In February 2005 an exchange was organised between the San Andres Archipelago of Colombia and Cuba, with the assistance of the UNESCO-Havana Office, to share skills and techniques for community-based beach monitoring.

From 18-22 February 2005, Ms. Giovanna Peñaloza of CORALINA (Corporation for the Sustainable Development of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina) visited Cuba to share her knowledge and experiences about community approaches to beach monitoring and management with Ms. Elsa Matos and Ms. Fara Carrera and their team from Havana Province's Planificaciòn Fisica.

Together they established eleven profile sites at Mayabeque Beach on the south coast of Havana Province and techniques for beach monitoring and data analysis were demonstrated. The team at Planificaciòn Fisica plan to establish similar monitoring programmes at other municipalities on the coast of Havana Province where erosion is a serious problem. Ideas relating to beach clean-ups, adopt-a-beach programmes, re-vegetation projects were also shared.

Playa Mayabeque is a site where erosion is a serious problem and where community members have come together to build groynes to try and stabilise the beach. Empowering the community on ways to mitigate the erosion is one of the goals of Planificaciòn Fisica.

A full report of this exchange visit is available; a powerpoint presentation about the exchange can also be viewed.
