UNESCO launches World Press Freedom Day 2007 website in Arabic

The website dedicated to the World Press Freedom Day 2007, to be celebrated in Colombia on 3 May, is now available in Arabic.
The website provides regular news service, practical information, more detail on the celebration, speakers and participants.
Arabic is one of UNESCO’s six official languages. The celebration of the World Press Freedom Day is an international event proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO's General Conference in 1991.
UNESCO field offices and different non-governmental organisations are organising various events dedicated to promotion of the free press. It is a date to encourage and develop initiatives in favour of press freedom and to assess the state of press freedom worldwide.
This year, the main celebration of the World Press Freedom Day, organised by UNESCO Headquarters, will take place in Medellin, Colombia. It will consist of a two-day conference on the theme “Press Freedom, Safety of Journalists and Impunity” and the award of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2007, which was granted posthumously to a Russian reporter Anna Politkovskaya.
