CARIBBEAN - St Vincent and the Grenadines Activities

SANDWATCH NEWSWATCH

In 2005 the Sandwatch/Small Islands Voice team in Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines decided to start a newsletter. Whilst their work had been gaining momentum and recognition, both at the national and international level, they felt the need to disseminate the information gathered, and the experiences gained, at the local level, in order to facilitate change at the grass roots level and to involve the stakeholders in a more meaningful way.

A committee was established comprising persons from the media, the Bequia Community High School (teachers and students), the Government, and other interested local individuals.

Twenty students, from grades 9-11, are involved in the preparation of this newsletter. They are selected on the basis of their participation in Sandwatch/Small Islands Voice activities. The newsletter is an extra-curricular activity.

The newsletter is printed at the Bequia Community High School with equipment provided by Small Islands Voice. Copies are distributed to the Ministry of Education for distribution to Ministry staff and other schools. Copies are also distributed to local hotels, the Bequia Tourism Association, dive shops and other outlets in Bequia.

The first edition of the newsletter, published in January 2006, and appropriately named SANDWATCH NEWSWATCH, was a bumper version with 23 pages. A copy was presented to the Director-General of UNESCO during his visit in January 2006. Subsequent editions are likely to be shorter.
