GLOBAL INTERNET-BASED FORUM

SMALL ISLANDS VOICE

Do you live in a small island?
Tell us what you think.

***************************************************************************************

Ranging from the ethics of biodiversity conservation to the collapse of the Doha round of the World Trade Organization talks, this discussion on …………….

A Small Islands Voice global internet-based forum, running since October 2002, engages the general public in small islands in an online debate on issues relating to environment and development.

Key issues are aired on this forum, and people send their responses to notify@sivglobal.org. All the responses are carefully read and compiled, and the most interesting ones are posted on the forum. The key issues, as well as the selected responses, are also sent out by e-mail, once every two weeks. To view this global forum, visit http://www.sivglobal.org.

Key issues have ranged from tourism to crime and violence, and from renewable energy to garbage disposal. After discussion on a particular topic is exhausted, all the responses relating to that topic are compiled and listed under the specific key issue.

To participate in this forum and to receive the messages by e-mail, send your e-mail address to moderator@sivglobal.org

The global forum has generated considerable interest among the general public living in small islands. Newspapers in the British Virgin Islands, Cook Islands, Palau, Seychelles and Samoa have published some of the articles and related stories, which are also being highlighted on national websites. The articles have also been published in newspapers in larger countries, a comment in the New Zealand Herald noted 'Size doesn't matter - the Small Islands Voice forum shows that. Being bigger simply means that it takes longer for the problem to become urgent'.

One of the discussion subjects considered by the forum in 2005-06 concerned the Viability of very small islands. A separate e-discussion group is being established to discuss growth and development in small island nations.

The support of Scotland On Line in developing and maintaining the forum is gratefully acknowledged.
