A community media meeting is taking place in Windhoek, Namibia, from 11 to 13 May 2009, to address challenges and issues surrounding community radio in Angola, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland.
The conference will encourage sharing, contribution and enhancement of knowledge and skills, related to the operation and development of community radio, by the participants and invited guests.

UNESCO promotes the establishment of community radios as catalysts tools for community voice and people-centred development. The African Charter on Broadcasting highlights the importance of community media and the meaningful role that international community can play in promoting sustainable development through community media.

In view of the expansion of community radio in several countries in Southern Africa, the UNESCO Office in Windhoek is looking forward to reinforcing capacities and serving as a catalyst for international cooperation to build partnerships among stakeholders involved in community media.

UNESCO is partnering in this effort with the Namibia Community Radio Network (NCRN) and the Namibian Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Namibia).
