    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, expressed her deep concern and called for restraint after the death of Lebanese journalist Assaf Abu Rahal, who worked for the daily Al-Akhbar, published in Beirut. He died in a clash at the border between Lebanon and Israel on 3 August that killed four people and injured two, including another journalist.

    The 5th meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) will be held in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 14 to 17 September 2010. It will focus on the following issues: managing critical Internet resources, security, openness and privacy, access and diversity, Internet governance for development, taking stock of Internet governance and the way forward, and cloud computing.

    UNESCO's Office in Montevideo releases a book on the use of Greenstone, open source digital library software, in Latin America. Entitled Greenstone: Un software libre de código abierto para la construcción de bibliotecas digitales. Experiencias en América Latina y el Caribe, the publication explains the multiple applications of Greenstone in the region and the work of national Greenstone’s centres.

    UNESCO supports training for women journalists in Haiti
    UNESCO supported the Haitian women’s media association REFRAKA in organizing training for women journalists from different regions of the country. The three-day workshop focused on the production of reports and shows, interviewing techniques and editing. UNESCO believes that increasing the capacity of women journalists can have a positive impact on the gender situation in Haiti.

    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today condemned the car bomb attack that devastated the Baghdad bureau of television news station Al-Arabiya on 26 July, killing three people and injuring 16. The Dubai-based station had recently received several threats from terrorist networks.

    ICTs in Education Prize: Call for nominations
    “Digital Literacy: Preparing Adult Learners for Lifelong Learning and Flexible Employment” is the theme of the 2010 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education. Funded by the Kingdom of Bahrain, the US$50,000 prize is divided equally between two winners. The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2010.

    UNESCO supports establishment of Pacific media freedom network
    UNESCO, in cooperation with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Commission, has launched the project Media for Democracy and Human Rights in the Pacific. This project will focus on strengthening the capacity of media workers and other civil society advocates to document, monitor and respond to media-rights violations in the Pacific.

    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, condemned today the murders of two Mexican journalists: Marco Aurelio Martínez Tijerina, radio journalist for the regional station XEDD Radio La Tremenda, found dead on 10 July in Montemorelos in Nuevo Leon state; and Guillermo Alcaraz Trejo, former cameraman and employee of the Chihuahua State Commission for Human Rights, shot to death in the city of Chihuahua on 10 July.

The training is focusing on communication and gender policy, and on marketing and creative community programming.

    Comics inform young people about AIDS, pregnancy and homosexuality
    A modern visual language to address issues related to youth and HIV / Aids and prejudice against those living with HIV/AIDS. That is the goal of a series of comics themed on sexuality and education for students of the Program on Health and Prevention in Schools (SPE), which was released in a ceremony held at the Convention Center Ulysses Guimarães, in Brasilia in June 2010. The publication will be sent to public schools attending the program.

UNESCO is committed to further expand universal participation in the World Digital Library (WDL) which reflects the values and priorities of our Organization” said UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Communication and Information at the opening of the first official meeting of the WDL partners held in Washington, DC on June 22-23.

    The Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova condemned the murder of Honduran TV journalist Luis Arturo Mondragón Morazán of Canal 19, who was gunned down in El Paraíso on the night of 14 June 2010. She also called on the authorities to take measures to stem the rising wave of violence again journalists in Honduras.

    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, condemned the murder of the Pakistani journalist Faiz Mohammad Khan Sasoli in Khuzdar in Balochistan province on 27 June, and called on the authorities to do everything possible to ensure that justice is done. The victim was a correspondent of the Aaj Kal newspaper and of the Independent News of Pakistan agency.
